Freediving in Buntzen Lake

Every now and then, especially in spring and early summer, the visbility around Vancouver will be too poor to go diving. Freediving in Buntzen Lake is a good alternative and well suited for linediving sessions. You can get to Buntzen Lake from Coquitlam, but keep google maps handy because it is easy to take a wrong turn. It is located at the northern end of Sunnyside Drive. Make sure you get there early on sunny weekends, because it will get busy fast.

You can swim out from the beach and get into 30 – 35 meters of water within a reasonable distance. At about 25 – 30 meters the water will get too dark to see the line, so attach a light to your bottom plate. The benefit of Freediving in Buntzen Lake over freediving in the ocean is that there will be no wave action and motorized boats are not allowed. Overall you should have a relaxed diving experience there.

Don’t go here for sightseeing, you’ll be disappointed.
