Whytecliffe Park freediving – the Cut

Whytecliffe park has some good entries for freediving. The cut is one of those. You can reach Whytecliffe from Vancouver by taking exit number 2 from Highway 1. After the highway, take the 1st exit on the roundabout onto Marine drive. Take the first left towards Horseshoe Bay. You’ll reach a roundabout from where you should see signs toward Whytecliffe. Park near the washrooms and go over a grassfield to take a set of stairs towards the cut. If you end up on a narrow beach you’ve got it right.

After getting into the water you can go towards the lighthouse or right along the wall. Ideal diving will depend on the current, which will be strong if you are not diving on slack. The visibility is hit or miss in the spring and summer, usually good in fall and winter. You can easily dive to 30m+ along the walls, and the best diving is usually in between 10 – 25 meters because of low visibility on the surface. Expect to see lots of rockfish, greenling, crab, plumose anemones and cloud sponges.
