Saanich Inlet dives, Henderson Point

Getting there: This dive spot is fairly close to Willis Point, and is also best for those who are happy sight seeing at at least 15 meters depth. From the Patricia Bay Highway, turn west onto Keating Cross road. Follow Keating until West Saanich Rd, and turn right. Follow this road for 5 km and turn left at Senanus Rd (turning right is Mt. Newton X Rd, and this might be the only clearly visible sign). Park at the end of the road. You are now at a 1 minute walk to the water. There are no amenities, but the little beach is a decent place for a picnic. When I was last there, we took a bbq and had a good meal after diving.

Hazards: There is no or negligible current in Saanich Inlet. There may be lots of jellyfish and the surface visibility can be bad but if it is it commonly clears up a few meters below the surface. Boats don’t get too close to the beach but there is some boat traffic.

Entry: There is a flagpole on the beach, in front of this flagpole are some shallow shelves. From here going out into deeper waters are three reefs. The first at 15 meters, followed by reefs at 20 and 30 meters. For scuba-divers it is no problem getting here but it can be difficult for freedivers especially if you are not comfortable with long and deep dives.

Things to see: Rockfish, perch, octopus, crab, nudibranch, cloud sponges, jellyfish, krill, six-gill sharks have been reported by scuba divers. Most of the life is near and around the rock reefs and shelves.
