Freediving the Yonaguni Monument

The Yonaguni momument is an underwater ‘monument’ of rock. Scientists debate whether it is man-made or natural. It has a mystical appearance and is a great freediving location. It can be very hard to get to Yonaguni for a freediving trip but it is possible and it seems to be well worth the trip. The water can be crystal clear and the underwater scenery is epic. There are three other common dive sites on the island.

The current is usually minor but make sure to contact a local dive operator to ask for the best conditions.

There are two pillars that reach witin 8 feet (2.7 m) of the surface, but overall the monument reaches a depth of 25 meters.

For more info on diving around Yonaguni island see the Okinawa tourism website, for the supposed history of the Yonaguni Monument see its Wikipedia page.
